7 Myths About Learning Japanese (Debunked)

28 May 2026 · Mozhippattru Japanese Language School

Plenty of myths make Japanese sound harder than it is. Let's clear them up.

  1. “Japanese is the hardest language.” It's different, not impossible — pronunciation and grammar are very learnable.
  2. “You must learn thousands of kanji before you can read.” A few hundred common kanji unlock a lot; you build gradually.
  3. “You need to live in Japan.” Immersion can be created anywhere with today's resources.
  4. “Adults can't learn languages.” Adults learn efficiently with structure and consistency.
  5. “Anime alone will teach you Japanese.” It helps listening, but you still need structured study.
  6. “You have to be perfect before speaking.” Speaking early — mistakes and all — is how fluency grows.
  7. “It takes forever.” Real progress comes in months with daily practice; N5 is reachable in a season.

Drop the myths, follow a plan, and Japanese becomes an enjoyable, achievable journey.
